The Fourth Stage of the Game - Heroes of War

Historical outline

There were officers as well as ordinary people among the war heroes. Many of them were women. Many a time they played very important roles. Working in shops, hospitals, post offices they often could do more than man fighting on the front line.

Eyewitness account

I’m being followed. I’m arriving to Cracow. But I can feel that there is someone (…) At last I’m going to the station and I’m waiting few hours on the platform. I’m waiting for the night train to Warsaw. But I need to warn Warsaw now. I’m going out onto the platform, looking for a way how to escape from these volksdeutches? I’m looking around and I can see that there is Maria Wittek on the platform with the inspection in Cracow, totally by accident. I’m slipping her a piece of paper: Sawa gives away information, Zo is being followed. And I sigh with relief. I knew that Maria Wittek, a member of the underground, will do what is needed. I’m calm.

So I know the only thing – I need to kill myself. Nothing else. Otherwise it won’t work. But how should I do it? How to kill myself? There’s a simple way. In Warsaw I’ll jump under the train and they will run me over. But I want to live! I don’t want to die! I want to escape from the ones who follow me! I will jump from the train. No. I was afraid. I was afraid to jump from the train. And it’s the day again. We’re coming to Żyrardów. Now is the only possibility to save myself. I’m going to jump. So I go slowly, step after step. There’s a Polish railwayman standing in the door. I’m telling him: Please hold the door. He holds. I jump. The train stops in a minute. I don’t know if it’s because they noticed or because there’s a station. I start from the ditch and I’m running. There was a forest nearby. I got to the forest. I’m saved! I’m alive! And I went the long way to Żyrardów, on foot, through the forest, around, to Warsaw. I’m reporting at our contact at Marcysia’s that I’m back.

Well, I’ve got many friends here in Toruń, they must help. But who to ask first? Who could keep the secret? There’s someone like that. I like her a lot and……..yes, she’s brave enough to do help me regardless the consequences.
