The Third Stage of the Hunt - Consipiracy

Historical outline

The Polish worked out different forms of resistance to the occupier. The groups of the military underground gained weapon, trained its members, carried out combat actions. Civil conspiracy gained secret information, carried out intelligence operations, faked documents, helped people at risk to conceal, published illegal press, printed leaflets, organized help for Polish families and prisoners of war, informed the society about the real situation on the front.

In Poland the military conspiracy began to form as early as September 1939. There were also conspiratorial organizations working in Toruń: Polska Akcja Niepodległościowa, Grunwald, Batalion Śmierci, Komenda Obrońców Polski, Gryf Pomorski, Szare Szeregi, Rota, Polska Armia Powstania.

Any tasks carried out within the framework of conspiratorial activity required excellent preparation and secrecy. Therefore there were private apartments, shops, pharmacies, surgeries turned into conspiratorial headquarters.

There were numerous conspiratorial headquarters located in Toruń’s Old Town.

Historical outline

The cruelty of the war, interrogations, maltreatment led to the situation where even people holding high posts in conspiratorial activity could give in and take up cooperation with the enemy. Commandant Edward Słowikowski alias Biały Grot was such a person. He was convicted of collaboration by the Home Army and sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out on 11th Jan 1945 in Toruń.

Eyewitness account

As a result of reconnaissance concerning Polska Armia Powstania (Polish Army of Uprising), AK (the Home Army) on 15th Dec 1944 gave the order in which commandant Słowikowski was accused of collaboration with the Gestapo and attempts to break conspiracy in the region. All the local outposts were ordered to work out units of Polska Armia Powstania located in their territory and the proofs were to be delivered as soon as possible, detailed reports concerning gathered information.
On 11th Jan 1945 in the restaurant Strzlenica in Przedzamcze street, lieutenant Pietkiewicz handed in the sentence. The person designated to carry out the sentence was Józef Śliwowski alias Skrzat. Before 9 pm Śliwowski reported at Prosta 15 where got a gun from Stanisława Samołowicz. The action was covered by Leszek Matuszkiewicz and Julia Bartoszewicz who at the same time were watching an apartment at Podmurna 9. A minute after 9 pm Słowikowski left the apartment with B. Kolińska and they went towards Jęczmienna street where at number 17 he dropped in to collect Halina Cieszyńska. When they left they headed for Sukiennicza street where Śliwowski, who was following, reached them. Passing the house at Sukiennicza 8 he shot Słowikowski, Cieszyńska and Kolińska being wounded in her arm managed to escape.
