The Bolyai János Practice Primary and Secondary Grammar School is one of the most popular schools in Szombathely. It works as the practice school of Berzsenyi Dániel College, with twelve grades. The most relevant feature is the eight-year grammar school education. It was established as the practice school of the Teacher Training Institute in 1958 and (was resident had its residence) in the building of the college.
The school changed quarters in 1974. The eight-year grammar school was set up in 1992, while the four-year Biology-History section was introduced in 2001.
Two essential items of the school’s pedagogical program are the value- and personality-based education and the principle of achievement. Personality, talent, knowledge and diligence are appreciated, and the cooperation of teachers and students is basically important. The balance of the classical scientific and foreign language studies is determinant in the grammar school syllabus.
Talent spotting and further development are also very much emphasized. In the grammar school section, the first two years main objective is skills development while during the last two years we intend to help the students prepare for the school-leaving and entrance examinations. In addition, there is an extra amount of foreign language lessons.
From grade nine, students have the possibility to make a special study of Maths, Science, Hungarian Literature or Information Technology. In the grammar section, foreign languages are taught in an increased number of classes. During the last two years, the four-year sections attend elective courses together.
Our school assures every student to preparations for the two-level school-leaving examination.
Scientific studies, Information Technology, language studies, Hungarian Literature and Grammar, Maths and History are the most successful areas of teaching.
The achievements of our students are measured by the school’s internal system of examinations and signaled by their outstanding results in county and national competitions. There is a high-standard art education in the first ten grades; the works of our students are regularly exhibited in the hall and the choirs of the school give concerts.
The school has several sister institutes, including the ‘Bundesgymnasium’ in Graz, and there is a student and teacher exchange agreement with a private school in England, a German school and a secondary school in Kolding, Szombathely’s sister city in Denmark.
About 1000 students attend our school and we have 86 highly qualified teachers. The school also functions as a further-training center, organizing trainings for about 200-250 teachers every year, with the assistance of the College.
Our school meets the requirements of up-to-date education regarding the facilities as well. A rather wide range of users attend our library, where the readers can choose from almost 25 000 items. We have three computer labs equipped with the latest multimedia computers. In 2001, the school was extended by a new building, containing the new gymnasium. Thus, the school has 32 classrooms, 5 subject-specific rooms, laboratories, 2 gymnasiums, a swimming-pool and an act hall, providing appropriate background to our work and to great events in the life of our city.
