GABIJOS Basic School, Klaipeda

“Gabijos” basic school – the newest one in Klaipeda – was established in 2003. The school got its name from the Goddess Gabija who is a Lithuanian goddess of fire. The school gives basic education of 8 years. The headmaster of “Gabijos” Basic school is Audrius Kurlavicius.

The school is a three-storeyed building, which is situated in one of the residential districts of Klaipeda. There are 460 students at our school this year. Besides children from the neighbourhood, who attend our school because it is a walking distance from their home, a lot of children come to our school from other parts of the city. 39 teachers work at our school, among them there are seven teacher-methodologists and 28 senior teachers. The curriculum includes such lessons as Lithuanian as a state language, Russian as a native language, English or German as a foreign language, Mathematics, History, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Geography, Ethics, Religion, Music, Art, Handicrafts and Physical Education.

Children are taught democracy, tolerance that means to make their own decision, become leaders, respect other’s opinion, relate and cooperate with each other. The main aims of the pedagogical staff are to educate an active, creative, spiritually enriched, physically advanced person; to disclose individual features of every child.

To achieve these goals following conditions have been created at school:

  • Subject integration;
  • Early studies of foreign languages (English is taught from the second form);
  • The bilingual project is successfully carried out (two teachers work with the same class simultaneously, speaking different languages – Russian and Lithuanian);
  • After their lessons children are engaged in clubs according to their interests;
  • Apart from teachers there are some specialists at school. They are social care teacher, special care teacher, psychologist, and speech therapist;
  • A students’ council exists and successfully works at school. Pupils say that school life has become much more interesting lately. In addition to curriculum they have a lot of interesting extra-curricular activities: sports, dance club, folk song and drama groups;
  • In spite of the fact that our school is only one year old we have some traditions: every form, that leaves the school, plants a tree; every school year we have health day outside, the best classroom competition;
  • Reasonable combination of studies, entertainment and work is “Gabijos” school motto;
